California Shakespeare Theatre – Innovation with Humble Beginnings

The California Shakespeare Theater, or “Cal Shakes” for short, is an innovative theater venue in Berkeley that began as a humble artistic collective in 1973, providing a dynamic and thrilling theatrical experience that appeals to patrons of all ages and backgrounds. Launching the classics into the 21st century, the company specifically focuses on relationship building. The theater’s mission is the very essence of being down in the trenches, with the people. This notion is exemplified by the theater’s mission: “With Shakespeare’s depth of humanity as our touchstone, we build character and community through authentic, inclusive, and joyful theater experiences.”

The California Shakespeare Theater takes this “in the trench” mentality to the next level. The theater provides in-school residencies to partner with classroom teachers, workshops and after-school classes, summer Shakespeare conservatories, student matinees, and internships for young adults interested in arts education, administration, and all of the surrounding facets of theater. Cal Shakes is overjoyed to provide opportunities for students in underserved schools and communities in these programs, ensuring equity for all students of diverse backgrounds. All students deserve to participate in high-quality programs to foster an appreciation for these classic stories.

California Shakespeare Theater also is home to the Triangle Lab, Cal Shakes’s research and development department. This department is tasked with the goal of developing new methods to combine theaters, artists, and community members to strengthen communities, bridge differences, and heal inequities.

Michael Wiles, an Actor, Musical Director, and Casting Director in the Greater Sacramento area, has played a number of roles in California Shakespeare Theater productions and looks forward to continued collaboration.
